The Deuteronomistic history, the Jahwist's history, the Priestly Writing and the Gospel of Mark are the basis for the portrayal of history in the Bible. Recent redaction-critical exegesis has revealed the original form of these four historiographical writings. A comparison shows that these four works have a surprisingly similar attitude toward history. All four of them talk about the past in order to establish a future for the present. They do not tell as much about how it was but rather how it will be. They are prophecy in the form of history.
