From its emergence in the 16. century protestantism has been closely connected with the political powers of its time. This has continued to be so through the changes after 1918 and the end of die sovereigns's male over the church. The symbiosis of theological reforms of the church and territorial states becoming protestant forms a constitutive element of the two fold history of modernisation of German Protestantism. The history of the term "political Protestantism" can be persued on two different levels. On the one hand there is the long history of Christian social ethics and political thought including that of Protestantism. On the other there is the special historical dimension of the history of the Prostestant Churches. The article concentrates on die latter even though its aim is not a mere historical account but a critical reflection and discussion of same important developments and empirical data.
