Trutz Rendtorff, editor of ZEE from 1969 until 2002, celebrated on January 24, 2011 his 80th birthday. The lecture in Trutz Rendtorff's honour describes the deep changes in the ethical debate in the half century in which Rendtorff decidedly influenced and shaped this debate. This happens under the perspective of pluralism in ethics, because Rendtorff himself puts his own concept occasionally under the title of "ethical pluralism". The birthday lecture distinguishes two possible meanings of such an expression. On the one hand it refers to an internal plurality in ethics, as it is often seen as characteristic for theological ethics in Protestantism. On the other hand it refers to the way in which ethics deal with pluralism in society. The article emphasizes this second aspect as a central challenge for ethies in the 21 century. It develops the concept of the "dignity of the different" as a key concept for such an ethics in pluralism.
