Neu Ewiges Leben dogmatische Überlegungen zu einem Zentralbegriff der Eschatologie
Zeitschriftenartikel

This article is concerned with the question of how, and in what Sense, one can speak about a completed human life as one which has the quality of eternal life. The first section formulates the basic answer: human life can only be eternal insofar as God himself chooses to make it eternal and when it is defined in every sense by its relationship to God. The second section argues that 'eternal' as an attribute of human life means in a formal sense a life which in the future is lasting and unlimited. The third Section defends this future aspect of eternal life in its discussion with interpretations limited to the present (präsentische Deutungen). This futuristic quality alone opens a possibility of salvation for people for whom there is no salvation in earthly life. In the concluding section an attempt is made as a basis for discussion to think about personal identity in spite of death. Personal identity is saved from death in a way that God, who remembers the individual and her or his life-story, awakens the memory of this life-story through the perspective of the person who has experienced.
