From a contemporary perspective, the article looks at the 500th anniversary of the Reformation as a current identity construction of German Protestantism in 2017. Given that this can only be a preliminary historical perspective, three exemplary topics are taken into consideration: 1. Differences between historiographical and church-public perspectives on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation; 2. Interpretations of 1517, trends and observations with regard to history politics, 3. Condition and self-image of German Protestantism in 2017? Against the backdrop of a complex overlay of history, culture of memory and history politics, the article identifies a manifold set of conflicts and meritalities in present-day Protestantism, that were only painstakingly harmonized by the festivities.
