The article pursues the thesis that assessment in the pastoral office is a complex and sometimes subtle process in which numerous explicit and non-explicit assessment instances and formats flow. That this is not a new phenomenon is shown by the early correspondence between Karl Barth and Eduard Thurneysen. With the concept of "mature narcissism" borrowed fromMichael Klessmann, a path is indicated at the end on which a successful integration of the various formats of external perception into one's own self-perception can succeed.
