What are the constituents which give a congregation of Christians the quality of a local church? In the current debates on the future structure of the church this question needs to be posed and answered. The author argues in favour of breaking up the dominant implicit equasion of parish with the parochial system; her wider concept of parish is outlined in six criteria for the future local church.
