Geschichte Israels Erwägungen zu einer historischen und theologischen Disziplin am Beispiel von Esra 1-6 und dem Bau des Zweiten Tempels in Jerusalem
Zeitschriftenartikel

According to the article, the task of the scholarly discipline "History of Ancient Israel" is twofold: historical and theological. On the one hand, the historical task is to collect and to evaluate as much information as possible concerning a defined geographical region "Israel". Ressources needed to achieve sustainable results are provided by biblical, classical, and ancient studies. As an example, the article focuses on the evaluation of the correspondence in Ezr 1-6 against the background of the evidence of the Elephantine-papyri. The output of that short enquiry is used to sketch the circumstances of the building of the Second Temple in historical view. On the other hand, the theological task of the discipline "History of Ancient Israel" is to carve out and to determine the concepts of historical displayed in Biblical texts. For example, the historical assumption that the destruction of Jericho by Joshua and the Israelites is un-likely leads to the further theological question why this story is told.
