Same-sex partnerships are part of the present sociocultural change of life styles. In the Federal Republic of Germany, same-sex partnerships are disadvantaged by the Roman-Catholic church and its labor law, which needs critique and revision. In the protestant churches, traditional prejudice has largely been reduced, although the public votes of protestant churches occasionally remain ambiguous. Men and women deciding for a homosexual partnership can refer to their constitutional rights of personal freedom. Concerning same-sex partnerships with children (adoptions, lesbian families by insemination, etc.), the well-being and need of the children have to be given priority. At present, there is a need for action as regards a specification of the legal frame for same-sex families and the improvement of their legal security.
