The article delivers a virtue-ethical interpretation of Reinhold Niebuhr's (1892-1971) famous serenity prayer, written in 1943 for a church service in a New England village. His prayer includes Niebuhr's theology in a nutshell and reveals it as deeply rooted in ancient and Christian traditions. As the article demonstrates, the serenity prayer it not just an appeal for grace, courage, and wisdom, but an invocation of God, which understands these virtues as gifts thereby emphasizing the primacy of grace.
