Although the "New Perspective on Paul" has initiated a fruitful debate about the historical roots and the theological significance of his language of justification, there is still considerable disagreement with regard to the terms "righteousness of God", "works of the Law", and a person's "own righteousness". A close reading of the relevant passages in the letters to the Galatians, the Philippians, and die Romans facilitates the interpretation of those terms against the background of early Jewish traditions. Paul's teaching on justification is opposed to specific Jewish (and Jewish-Christian) conceptions of an intact relationship with God that imply an intensified observance of the Torah, and it is concerned with God's commitment to unite Jews and Gentiles in Christ, thereby bringing the history of God 's dealings with Israel to its eschatological conclusion. These exegetical insights are of fundamental importance for any attempt to explicate the doctrine of justification for today.
