The commemoration of the Holocaust is one of the key coordinates of German self-understanding today. This had been a consensus until fairly recently. Recently, however, this consensus has been challenged. Same voices in the public debate have denounced the commemoration of the Holocaust as a "civil religion of the West". This gives rise to the question whether there can be a non-polemical recourse to »civil religion« in the German culture of memory.
