In the past, exploration of distant forms of church affiliation was a central part of the church membership research of the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany). Yet the prepublication issue of the present 5th church membership survey of the EKD (further: "KMU V") does not explicitly mention the topic of distant church membership. This essay starts from the assumption that distant forms of church affiliation typical for modernity have not yet been sufficiently investigated. Based on a rereading of the prepublication, this contribution hence presents implicit observations of the KMU V on the issue of distant church affiliation. To improve the actual perception of modern forms of church affiliation such as distant church affiliation in the course of future evaluations and interpretations of the KMU V data, this essay proposes the abandonment of the theorem of indifference as a central interpretation category of the KMU V. From an empirical perspective, categories of perception and interpretation which understand the interviewed as self-confident agents regarding church affiliation will instead prove more effective.
