The article discusses recent tendencies in Jesus research. They all present the person of Jesus relative to two different contexts: the historical context of his work and life on the one hand, and the context in which the account is addressed on the other. A first focus of research is thus the exploration of the historical, cultural and religious situation of Galilee. The results, often through excavations, are essential for the interpretation of the work of Jesus. A second area of discussion are the recent portrayals of the person of Jesus from exegetical and theological perspectives. Future Jesus research will have to concentrate more on a hermeneutical mediation of the historical and contemporary contexts. The opposition between the "historical Jesus" and the "Christ of faith" that characterizes modern Jesus research muse be overcome by an interpretation of these two perspectives as complementary perceptions of the historical anchorage of the Christian faith. A major challenge of future Jesus research will be to bring out the theological point of the historical dimension of Christian faith.
