The church has been discussing the question of how to preach since its beginnings, and so did Johann Lorenz of Mosheim and Johann Christoph Gottsched in the first half of the 18th cent. Integrating impulses from enlightenment philosophy, both of them distanced themselves from the way of preaching of early modern Lutheranism. They opted for a reform of preaching and propagated their concerns in many ways. Over against a biblically founded and reflected "rhetorica sacra", they advanced a theory of proclamation that relies on a reasonable presentation of its topics. They were, however, well aware of the fact that, in view of the power relations within their contemporaneous Lutheran territorial churches, their reform project was a delicate matter.
