With the terminology we use in the exegetical description language, important preliminary decisions are made - mostly unconsciously and without reflection - which predefine the understanding of the texts. This is especially true for the fundamental distinction "Jewish versus Christian". This distinction, however, does not occur in the New Testament, but is a formation to be found not before the second century. It is used for the first time in the Letters of Ignatius of Antioch, aiming to exclude any Jewish way of life from the Christian congregations. With Justin Martyr and the Didache, however, we encounter an interest in integrating Jewish ways of life and Jewish faith into the Christ-movement. The distinction made by Ignatius was renounced accordingly. The view into the second century is thus important for the question, on the basis of which assumptions we want to read the texts of the New Testament today.
