The article outlines the history of the Jews in Germany since 1945 and attempts to acknowledge the continuing presence of the consequences of the Shoah, while at the same time trying to avoid describing Jewish life after 1945 as completely trapped in such a dependence. In addition, the role of anti-Semitism for Jewish life in Germany after 1945 is to be addressed, without understanding it as a natural constant. To this end, three aspects will be addressed: First, the development of Jewish demography, social structure and migration, secondly, the affiliation of Jews between self-descriptions and descriptions from outside, and thirdly, the political and cultural participation of Jews in German society, which also includes dealing with the permanent presence of anti-Semitism. By doing so, the article will describe several waves of reinvention of Jewish life in Germany after 1945, a process, which has not ended until today.
