The study analyses the new Debate on Poverty in Germany which was cause by rapidly growing poverty rates during the last years and the contributions of the protestant church in Germany to it. In this Debate Poverty is defined as a relative lack of capabilities to participate actively in society. Implicitly this argument draws from the idea of a more egalitarian society, which favours >just parttcipation<. It is shown how social inequality is reproduced in education and labour markets. The church responds to this by outlining the idea of a fair competitive Market-Economy, in order to have access to people must better be provided for with equal chances in education.
