The article asks about the consequences of the late modern paradigm shift in the relation-ship between church and society in terms of church theory. It analyses the current social and organizational forms as products of historical constellations and challenges, which have led to a form of local church that is only partially able to cope with the current challenges. In a second step, elements of a post-parochial church are constructively proposed that support the communication of the gospel in late-modern plurality.
