The Leuenberg Agreement was adopted 50 years ago. Reason enough to ask about its history of impact and its current significance. Since the Agreement sees itself as a contribution to the whole of ecumenism, attention is first given to the current state of ecumenism with regard to its understanding of church communion. Although there is widespread talk of church fellowship, the picture is still dominated by the well-known traditional differences. If, on the other hand, the focus is on the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe(CPCE), we encounter a productive reception of the Agreement, in which the declaration of church communion has initiated a manifold process of its realisation. At the same time, the CPCE is also faced with decisions on direction, for which four suggestions for further theological and institutional development are considered in the third part of this contribution.
