This contribution asks for the general direction of ecclesiastical developments against the background of the ongoing crisis of the Catholic Church. The answer is not simple but multifaceted, as, ideally, there are five different options for future church development: The option of institutional stabilization, the fundamentalist option, the option of pragmatic self-regulation, the option of elitist minorisation and the option of re-learning. Although this last option was favored by the Vatican Council and is supported by sociologists of religion - from Helmut Schelsky to Leo Laeyendecker -, for a whole complex of reasons it obviously does not come to bear at the moment.
