Implementing a select set of criteria, this article compares the reform efforts within the regional member churches of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), the German Catholic Church and the Federation of Free Evangelical Churches in Germany. It includes the interpretation of the ecclesiastical situation, which is in all cases considered in need of reform, as well as the reform targets, the instruments employed, the agents of the reform processes and the assessment of their possible success. Financial shortages constitute the starting point of all reform efforts found in the communities and churches under examination.
