Across Germany, the number of students without religious affiliation has increased. But the lack of religious affiliation is not to be identified with atheism. Additionally, different trends in Eastern and Western Germany should be taken into account. In sum one could say that, in most cases, the lack of religious affiliation stands for a spectrum of multiple secularities. Thus new perspectives are introduced into religious education which touch upon the questions of contextuality, relevance and elementarization in a special way. This has ramifications for the profiling of religious education, which is described referring to systemic perspectives and approaches of empowerment.
