Zeitschriftenartikel

In the summer of the year 2002, the struggle over the Brandenburg school subject LER (Lebensgestaltung - Ethik - Religionskunde) which was first introduced after the German unification in 1990, has come to a certain resolution. Following a recommendation by the German ?Supreme Court? (BVG), state and church have come to an agreement concerning the future status of religious education in the Brandenburg schools. The present article looks back at the struggle over LER, summarizes the main points of debate, and offers a critical evaluation of the court's suggestion for a compromise. In addition to this, the article discusses a number of comprehensive perspectives concerning the place of religion in state schools and the meaning of different models of religious education in relationship-to church, state, education, and society. The article concludes with suggestions for future work in theory and praxis.
