This literature review traces some basic tendencies of Protestant theological research on the topic of marriage within the past twenty years against the background of the controversy on the statement on family life of the EKD published in 2013. The review of exemplary research publications shows that, to this day, the discussion about marriage is first and foremost a struggle about an appropriate contemporary understanding of the institutional character of marriage. The present literary review reveals that, within the frame of this debate, some recently published studies form a promising basis for further reflection of marriage within a critical and theologically substantiated ethics of institutions.
