To arrange the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's birthday, was primarily bound the Protestant church in the GDR. But owing to the rule of the communist party (SED) it became a special challenge, because Luther recently too was demanded for the GDR founding mythology. The Protestant church took the chances of jubilee, to emphasize faith in Luther's sense. The jubilee was celebrated by large publicity and ecumenical participation. The communist government was more tolerant than otherwise. During the celebrations some actual political expectations were addressed to the dictatorship. This article informs about preparations and events of the Lutherjubilee 1983 in the temporal context.
