Luthers frühe Kritik an der Heiligenverehrung und ihre Bedeutung für das ökumenische Gespräch
Zeitschriftenartikel

Hagiology and the Cult of the Saints hold different positions in the protestant and Catholic churches. In ecumenical treatments of this theme, one meets a view - especially in CA 21 with is approval of the veneration of and intercession for the saints - which can be equated with the modern Catholic view. Luther's early treatment of the Cult of the Saints, on the other hand, show us that since 1516 he intended to stamp the entire cult as harmful to the faithful, and to plead for is abolition. His sermons on the Ten Commandments (1516-17) ranked under transgression against the First Commandment, contain a comprehensive criticism of externals, and it is corroborated in his writings of the early 1520s and Reformation practice. It is, therefore, hot correct to assume a break in Luther the Reformer's criticism of the Cult of the Saints.
