In this essay Martin Luther's so called "chief writings" will be re-examined 500 years after their first publication in 1520. The author focusses on the debate about the problematic term "Hauptschriften", not least because Luther himself was skeptical about the "eternal value" of his works. It will be argued that those texts (i.e., "To the Christian Nobility", "On Christian Liberty", "The Babylonian Captivity of the Church", "On Good Works") actually mark a new stage in Luther's theological development, but not its final point. Even today these writings are an important basis for reflections on current problems in the Evangelical as well as the Roman-Catholic churches.
