Currently the meaning and importance of confessional religious education within the public school con- text in Germany is widely discussed. The author argues that in the future the plausibility of this teaching subject will depend on its life-caring and value-oriented contribution to the individual and communal conduct of life. In this sense the issue of human rights is an important topic for religious pedagogy and religious education because it gives space to raise and combine ethical, theological and juridical questions of human dignity in a specific protestant perspective of justification and orientation towards the individual human being as person, created and cared for by God's humanity.
