The article deals with the question of how different types of islamic daŽwa - the "Call to Islam" that addresses Muslims on the one hand and people of other faiths on the other - relate to the societies they are acting in. Firstly, it is shown that in the 20th century a great number of new daŽwa-organizations with different profiles emerged. Secondly, four major models of current daŽwa-theology and daŽwa strategy are outline: (1) the purifying-individualistic model, (2) die revolutionary-procedural model, (3) the reformistic-organizational model and (4) the liberative-cooperative model. The question is raised, whether these different approaches threaten die basis of pluralistic societies or contribute to social justice, peace and equality. Whatever the answer, it is obvious that there is an urgent need for research on missionary religions and their influence on societies.
