Feldtkeller, Andreas
Neu Missionswissenschaft und Interkulturelle Theologie eine Verhältnisbestimmung
Zeitschriftenartikel

The article discusses the relation between "Mission Studies" and "Intercultural Theology", as both terms appear side by side in the most recent syllabus of theological education in Germany. Against a tendency to see "Intercultural Theology" as a replacement for what has been "Mission Studies" so far, the paper argues that the topic of mission and its critical theological reflection is indispensable for "Intercultural Theology". Arguments for this are the importance of missionary thinking and action in contemporary non-western churches, the need to evaluate the history of Christian mission as a whole (not only the last 500 years) for the genesis of intercultural diversity in Christianity and the causal relation in New Testament times between the missionary outreach of the Christian message beyond the people of Israel and the intercultural relation between "Jews" and "Greeks" in the New Testament, which is formative for any later intercultural Christian community.
