Can "multiculturalism" be the basis of a liberal society? In this article, the concept of culture is first differentiated as a consumer culture, communication culture (as a "knowledge culture", as a "democratic procedures culture", as a "civil society discourse culture") and familial / social / ethnic particular culture, before the concept of multiculturalism (with reference to Charles Taylor, Will Kymlicka, Jürgen Habermas, Seyla Benhabib and CinziaSciuto) is problematized. After considerations of the concept of culture, using the example of legalistic Islam and criticism of Islam, it is insisted that the democratic constitutional state is neutral with regard to religions and worldviews, but that this should not be confused with cultural neutrality. The danger identified is that an identitarian concept of multiculturalism contributes to the segregation of society and encourages illiberal forces. In contrast, the enduring value of liberality and values of the Enlightenment is emphasized.
