What does it mean for a sermon when it is delivered in a secular context? Working with the assumption that the predicted decline of church membership according to the "Freiburger Studie" will go hand in hand with a rise in areligious self-conceptions, this article sets out to discuss the potential homiletic consequences of a majority unaffiliated to areligious society with regards to the (I.) addressees, (II.) purpose and task, as well as the (III.) content of a sermon. Classic questions of homiletics, such as those dealing with the contact with listeners, the handling of the tension between subjective and supra-subjective perspectives or the handling of elements critical of religion in a sermon, appear in the aforementioned context in an amplified form.
