The present debates about consequences from the 5th survey on church membership overemphasize the dimension of ecclesiastical and - to a lesser degree - individual christianity. The importance of Christendom's public effects on culture, however, is barely being considered in the discussion, which is in significant contrast to its empirically measurable relevance. This contribution argues for an adequate consideration of public Christianity as reflected in approaches of Public Theology, especially as regards the religious dimension of culture and the ethical orientation of society.
