The discussion on the role of pastoral work nowadays is influenced by empirical surveys amongst church members and amongst pastors, and by programmatic papers issued by church leadership. The article investigates the interests and implications of those new role images of pastoral work. It points out the rising relevance of the church's organisational framework and the ambivalent role of 'spiritual' aspects of the pastor's image.
