The 500. anniversary of Melanchthon's birth 1997 saw a number of publications that also mention educational aspects of his thinking. Melanchthon's ideas on education gained considerable influence. He was often consulted as an expert, many of his former students became schoolmen, and his books spread all over Europe. Most of his remarks on educational matters are concerned with special issues. His views on the general foundations of education can be found mainly in his Philosophiae moralis epitomes libri duo and in his Liber de anima. In its centre education is moral education. Melanchthon elaborates its possibility and its limitation. It can produce "civil justice" but not "justice before God". The Christian faith has civilizing effects, but it is not to be seen as a means to the end of producing him. Education can promote the understanding of Christian belief, but it cannot produce faith.
