The relations between religion and violence are ambivalent, because religion for itself is an ambiguous phenomenon. This is obvious in the case of religious fanaticism and can be shown by the logic of sacrifice/ victim. We also have to focus our attention an apocalypticism, which is well known in various religious traditions. Following P. Tillich's theory of religion and its ambiguity, there will be given a systematictheological interpretation of the ambiguous relationship between religion and violence. Al the end, the Christian idea of love and its ethical consequences will be discussed, especially that of loving our enemies and a christologically motivated form of tolerance.
