The author studies how sociology was discussed and applied in the articles of the Pastoraltheologie and other publications of that time. The result is ambivalent: Sociology helped the theologians to understand and accept the secularisation of society, legitimizing it and thus encouraged the secularisation of the German Volkskirche and its work and life.
