Streitfall Babyklappe zur ethischen Beurteilung eines populären Hilfsangebots
Zeitschriftenartikel

Since 2000, around one hundred baby hatches have been installed in German cities to save the lives of newborn children abandoned by their mothers. According to statistics, however, the number of abandoned babies and of neonaticides has not gone down, but over 300 babies have been made anonymous by means of these facilities. The article argues that it is ethically illegitimate to compromise children's right to know their own identity for a questionable effect on the protection of life. Therefore, baby hatches and similar services should be replaced by less problematic alternatives which offer counseling for the concerned women on how to resolve their difficult Situation in a way that does not preclude future contact with their child.
