In some recent publications, the Catholic theologians Magnus Striet and Ottmar Fuchs have proposed a new interpretation of the cross of Jesus: On the cross, God's son atones for God's own guilt, namely the negative sides of his creation. After an outline of the positions, the article demonstrates the merits of Striet's and Fuchs's treatment of some difficult questions of the doctrines of God and creation as well as eschatology, but some critical questions concerning their concepts of sin, omnipotence, and judgment are in order. This renders their interpretation of the cross deficient especially as regards the theology of the cross itself.
