The church as a whole and pastors individually need to learn to cope with the rapid change that is taking place in all areas of society. What was learned decades ago in the university requires updating and revising. Supervision that accompanies professional work for a period of time permits reflection on one's own changing pastoral practice, especially on the aspects of communication and relationship that permeate all pastoral work and on the aspects of role clarity and religious convictions. Supervision can be helpful to develop new strategies and job perspectives - though it should neither take on functions of leadership nor try to make itself indispensable.
