Theologie im Fachmenschenzeitalter eine Erinnerung an Emil Schürer
Zeitschriftenartikel

The article tries to elaborate and to analyze the systematic concept of science and theology of Emil Schuerer. Schuerer is known as first editor of the Theologische Literaturzeitung and as the author of the famous work "The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ". In his genuine scientific domain, the Study of the New Testament, he has published only very few articles. Most of them concentrated on central theological issues, especially on the teaching of Jesus Christ. Analyzing the scientific principles of Schuerer`s work as editor, of his reviews and of his historical and theological scholar-work it is argued that there is a strong tension between the ideal of the one hand and intense apologetic (theological and dogmatic) interests on the other hand. These interests are focussed on Jesus Christ as the original representative and revelator of free and individual personality. This antagonistic concept stands in the back of Schuerer's image of Phariseism. The concept itself reflects the typical intellectual situation of Schuerer's generation in the Wilhelmian empire. In this dualistic concept religion - i.e. protestant Christian religion - is used and recommended to heal the self-estrangement of the subject caused by is total dedication to is professional work in highly specialised, "industrialized" societies.
