In Theodor Fontanes letztem Roman "Der Stechlin" nimmt die soziale Frage wegen der Wahlerfolge der Sozialdemokratie und dem Auftreten der religiös-sozialen Bewegung Stöckers eine wichtige Rolle ein. Die adligen Protagonisten diskutieren darüber angeregt mit dem religiös-sozial gesinnten Pastor Lorenzen. Aber letztlich wird das Soziale nur im Plauderton gestreift oder idyllisch dargestellt. In Fontanes "Roman der guten Gesellschaft" (Demetz) unterbleibt eine realistische Schilderung der sozialen Verhältnisse, wie sie zeitgleich im englischen und französischen Roman vorkommt. Zu fragen ist, ob dieses Desinteresse Fontanes mit seinem "kritisch-auswählenden Calvinismus" (Hüffmeier) zu tun hat: "Was ist, ist durch Vorherbestimmen". Ausgenommen von dieser Plauderton-Haltung ist allerdings Fontanes scharfe Kritik am sozial unsensiblen Bourgeois.
In Theodor Fontane's last novel "The Stechlin" from 1898, the "social question" plays a noticeable role, specifically with reference to the growing successes of the workers' German Social Democratic Party at that time and the religious social movement related to Adolf Stöcker. The aristocratic protagonists discuss this animatedly with their pastor Lorenzen, who himself holds religious-social sympathies. Altogether, however, the "social question" is only a matter of light conversation and looked at from an idyllic perspective. In this "novel about respected society" (Peter Demetz) a realistic description of the social situation is missing in contrast to the British and French novels of that time. It can be asked whether this disinterest by Fontane is connected with his "critical-election Calvinism" (Wilhelm Hüffmeier), as in one of his poems Fontane says: "what is, is by predestination". A different tone, however, can be found in Fontane's sharp criticism of the socially insensible bourgeois.
