The pandemic has brought home to many the limits of Germany's well-resourced health and social systems, the danger of marginalizing vulnerable populations, and the excessive demands placed on families in a mobile society. With the awareness of vulnerability and dependence, however, the longing for community and the willingness to support one another has also grown. Community diakonia and neighborhood work have proven to be sustainable in this situation; church and diakonia become part of caring communities. It is worthwhile to learn from the experiences of the diaconal communities of the 19th century. Unlike then, it is about a community of equals, not about a counterpart of those who help and those in need of help, but about an open, local community of responsibility of the diverse from those affected to supporting institutions. The new "we" that emerges between church and diakonia can draw on biblical roots.
