Since the Second World War, when pastors were absent, lay preaching in a regular Sunday church liturgy has developed. Today this appears as an alternative when, especially in small rural parishes, a Sunday service would not otherwise take place. "Lectors" typically read a sermon text, provided by the Church for that Sunday and adapt it to their local congregational situation, wheras predicants, who have been trained throughmore substantial study courses in theology for the task of preaching, prepare sermons of their own. The article discusses the common features and differences in these two kinds of "lay" preachers. It looks at the debate about ordaining them though they are not theological professionals, and points to their special contribution to preaching in church.
