This contribution asks about the capabilities of protestant social ethics to respond to the challenges of modern life sciences. Notably Georg Wünsch, who held the first chair for social ethics in Germany at Marburg University, developed his social ethics considering not only the social sciences but also the natural sciences. Concerning himself with the natural sciences helped Wünsch to cultivate social ethics as a complex theory of human experience, the social, and religion. Critically appraising and going beyond Wünsch's approach, this article outlines a concept of social ethics which considers particular perspectives of modern life sciences. Three theses reflect on how the perception of modern life sciences is generic for the self-understanding and validity claim of contemporary social ethics.
