As the public discourse on religion intensified in the second half of the eighteenth century, the Osnabrück lawyer, statesman, historian and writer Justus Möser (1720-1794) contributed to it with important and original statements. His governmental responsibilities meant he advocated an understanding of religion and Christianity that was decidedly pragmatic and functional. Instead of biblical and metaphysical argumentations, concrete, church-bound religious forms were sought for the social and political shaping of tasks. In this way, Möser supplemented enlightened theology of religion with central aspects that were orientated on political practice, proving himself an independent, conservative and innovative representative of the Enlightenment.
