One of the characteristic features of religion is an inherent claim to truth and its problematisation. But this necessitates the question of how the relation between religion and truth is structured, and how this question can be dealt with in methodological perspective. This article focuses on the clarification of these questions in dialogue with the insights of classical pragmatism. Its first part presents an outline of the essence of a pragmatically informed approach to the topic of truth, the second part discusses individual elements of this essence with regards to religion. It is striking that, in religious practice, truth does not occur primarily in the form of claims to truth to be clarified in a discursive manner, but first and foremost in the form of implicit insinuations. A complex spectrum of methods is hence necessary to address this difference, as will be outlined in this article.
