The essay addresses central methodological and contextual approaches to current research on the Old Testament Books of Wisdom, it cites intellectual and theological reasons for the heightened interest in the wisdom of the Old Testament and maps out a theology of wisdom. Of fundamental significance for the literary and theological classification of the wisdom literature of the Old Testament are the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Aramaic, and pagan Greek concepts of wisdom as well as the extracanonical Israelite-Jewish wisdom as it appears in the Qumran scrolls and the so-called pseudepigraphic writings. The definition of the relationship between wisdom and the Torah is presented exemplarily as a central field of current research. In this context the author discusses various models of perception as well as different motivations for ethical behavior based on wisdom.
