Throughout the last hundred years, the soul was considered an unsuitable anthropological concept and therefore rejected in scientific theology. At the same time, the soul's plausibility in religious practice remained steadfast. This hiatus is a problem perceived particularly in the domain of pastoral care. This article deals with the reasons for scholarly scepticism and at the same time suggests ways of how to speak about the soul - in terms of epistemology, exegesis and systematic theology. The reflections aim at constructively helping pastors to connect discussions of the soul to practice, including but not limited to the context of dying, death and mourning.
